Imminent price increase on domain names

Buying or renewing domain names soon?

If you are planning to purchase new domains or renew your current .COM or .NET domains, do it within the next two days. A price increase is coming which is going to make an impact on the economy of smalltime bulk domain buyers and renewers. Is it something to be worried about?

On July 1, 2010, the price on .COM and .NET domain names will increase by 7% and 10% respectively according to VeriSign®, the registry operator of .COM and .NET. Register your new domains and/or renew your current ones before that date, and you will save anything from Pennies to larger amounts. Owners of micro niche blog /website networks especially will notice the impact of the increase.

As you may have noticed from my post thumbnail, my preferred domain registrar is NameCheap. I use GoDaddy too, but would not hesitate to recommend NameCheap simply because they offer the most complete solution for me. They provide WhoIs Guard protection and an SSL sertificate for the first year for each new domain registered with them, at no extra cost.

A few words on micro niche domains and the new prices

The price increase is hardly an issue for those with less than 10-30 domains. Micro niche blog and site builders on the other hand, will no doubt feel the sting. On that note: with the changes introduced with the infamous MayDay-update, with which Google confirmed they hate dislike micro niche blogs with keyword-optimized content to entice visitors into clicking AdSense or other affiliate links, I’m sure there already are thousands of niche domains available in the market today, seeing how many micro niche sites have been de-indexed lately.

According to this response in the NameCheap support forum, effective on July 1, 2010 the new price on .COM and .NET domains will be $9.98 plus an $0.18 ICANN fee. In other words not a big deal for us small timers, but if you are the next niche network King and you have everything planned out but haven’t completed the domain bulk purchase yet, now is the time.

Also take note that, discount coupon codes for NameCheap domain names are only valid when either purchasing a new domain, or if you have at least 40 domain names registered with NameCheap, you can use the discount code when renewing your domains. I have noticed some customers with less than 40 domain names who asked nicely for an exception from those terms, and the NameCheap staff seem to respond positively quite often to those requests. But on general basis you should have at least 20-30 domains with them if you are going to try your luck.

Don’t forget about the thousands of laser-targeted niche domains that will become available in the market in the next couple of months, many of which already have a significant number of back-links pointing to them. Not that it has not been like that for several years, but the MayDay update killed off thousands of niche sites and I have already seen many great domain names going cheap in places like NamePros.

Also, Web 2.0 properties such as Squidoo and Hub Pages seem to attract more followers now. Why should they post their own, unique content on their own domain when they can simply post regurgitated PLR content on a lens or miniwebsite, and still earn shared AdSense revenue with it.

Dillie the Domestic Deer

Sometimes when I feel a little frustrated or bored, I like to browse websites such as the hysterical IcanHazCheeseburger, CAD Comic and the Camarades web cam community; in a way one feel less lonely when watching other people doing their everyday things in front of and around their web cam, even if it sometimes is of adult nature.

While browsing some of Camarades’ web cams, I suddenly found myself looking at what could have been a very strange dog breed, or a mutant cat of some kind. But it was a deer. A vision impaired, domestic house pet deer! I thought those creatures were supposed to wandering around in the woods, looking adorable. A lady popped into view from the left, approaching the bed upon which a wild animal was resting. She sat down and cuddled it like she probably would any cute dog or cat, really big ones.

It was a true Disney moment. Dillie the house pet deer lives in Ohio together with the rest of the family, which includes some just as adorable cats, and a nice lady. You can watch their web cam by visiting this link, and they even have their own FaceBook fan page!

Other than finding a domestic deer on a web cam, it’s been a weird day: a free e-mail provider I have used for many years and always liked, are shutting down their services, and I have received the first warnings from Microsoft regarding Windows 7 Ultimate RTM soon to be deactivated. I have contemplated upgrading, but will revert to Windows XP Professional, instead. Nothing about Windows 7 made me want nor need it more than XP.

Drop My Link-For Free Backlinks

When browsing online yesterday I found this neat, free online tool called “Drop My Link“. It’s user-friendly little helper that finds web properties letting visitors add their backlinks. Like when you buy a new computer mouse and toss the manual in the bin, this tool is so easy, no manual is required.

The website presents two text fields, “Keywords” and “Find”. In the “Keywords” field you type in your keywords, for instance “how to grow vegetables”. The “Find” option includes a list of following properties, for filtering out which kind of websites you want included in the results:

Word of caution: do not abuse social web properties, blogs or any other places accepting backlinks. If you are commenting in a blog to add your backlink, make sensible and in context comments. Show respect when building backlinks and commenting in others blogs, and your efforts will be rewarded with better rankings in Google for your website, which means more free traffic.

Catching the Google Buzz

With their shiny new social network toy strangely reminiscent of Twitter, Google introduces Buzz, which by connecting to your Gmail account and adding new features supposedly makes life easier for social creatures who likes to chat and share information about themselves. Question is, do you need to catch the Google Buzz?

The first thing I noticed when going online this morning while waiting for my coffee was a lady with the name Harriet, aggravated by how Google Buzz auto-shares her Reader account with her most frequent contacts, including an abusive ex-husband and a boyfriend. If you can no longer reach that particular post by the time you read this, try the Gizmodo link. Never mind the Gizmodo comments.

People e-mailing her anonymous blog account are added on her frequent contacts list, as the e-mails are forwarded to her personal mail account. In the name of being social and sharing everything, Buzz adds anyone sending an e-mail through her blog to a list giving them access to personal information she would otherwise not share with the whole world. Simply disconnecting from Buzz doesn’t help that much:

Oh, yes, I suppose I could opt out of Buzz — which I did when it was introduced, though that apparently has no effect on whether or not I am now using Buzz — but as soon as I did that, all sorts of new people were following me on my Reader! People I couldn’t block, because I am not on Buzz!

Harriet’s outburst comes after several years with mounting frustration caused by the way personal information is spilled all over the web by free Google services, with Buzz being the proverbial last drop. The Google Buzz team receives numerous complaints from frustrated users having strangers digging around in their personal information and Reader account. Though it ought to be said that, what probably got to her most was the rather user-unfriendly way to effectively disabling Buzz.

With his team’s collective efforts, Tissa Godavitarne’s ACME People Search improves step by step, progressing from one stage to the next. My previous, short post on the subject implied some frustration on my part, however this update is more thorough. As the title suggests: ACME People Search Free with 100% Display Rate.

Many affiliates felt the old Display Rate and Success Rate concept complicated things and were intimidated by it. Because of this, Tissa has waived the old system to let all of the affiliates enjoy a 100% display rate from their People Search engine affiliate links, which includes AdSense, ClickBank, MyLife and HD. Furthermore, it is mandatory to subscribe to Step 3 for at least 45 consecutive days for an A.P.S. referral commission payout, which must exceed $200.

“Userfriendly” not just a word?

Whether the new system with a 100% display rate and free hosting for the People Search engine makes ACME People Search easier to grasp for new affiliates, is still debated. With numerous details still not in place and the back office resembling an ongoing experiment, in its current state ACME People Search is hardly the most userfriendly experience. Admittedly, the back office is easier to navigate now, with referral earnings showing and important links easily accessible.

Tissa’s statement, posted in the A.P.S. Support forum on January 30, 2010:

The “Display Rate” concept for the free People Search engine will be waived and referrals given access to their own People Search page with a 100% display rate for ClickBank, HD, MyLife and AdSense on Step 1, which is “free forever”. This to avoid further confusion on what’s included with each step.
Step 3 subscription is now required in order to receive GDI sign-ups, otherwise they go in Tissa’s GDI downline. Previously, Step 1 & 2 were needed for this, but with most referrals cancelling Step 3 within long, it was hurting everybody’s success rate.

Step 1 Free with 100% Display Rate

Step 1 has always been free, with a limited Display Rate. When activating Step 1, new affiliates get their own free People Search engine with a 100% display rate for ClickBank, AdSense, MyLife, HD and US Search Social Network Search. They can stay at Step 1 and earn money off of the affiliate links, or upgrade to Step 2/3 and gain additional income streams and other perks.

The Step 3 requirement was added to balance out the generous offer for Step 1 affiliates. GDI usually is the main reason for joining A.P.S., and it is too early to tell how the current updates will affect it. The added incentives for subscribing to Step 3 could help with building a retentive Step 3 list, at least in theory.

A GDI membership is $10 per month and comes with (very) basic web hosting features, your own .ws domain name and its own MLM affiliate program. Works well in combination with ACME People Search, if the affiliate knows how to earn money online in the first place.

In conclusion

ACME People Search is not as userfriendly as it could be, and it has a way to go before I would call it that. The 100% display rate for the People Search engine in Step 1 makes ACME People Search available to everyone with Internet access, and they can’t afford Step 2 and 3, or they just want to earn money by means of affiliate links in their free People Search engine, they are free to do so.

As for Step 2 and 3, no-one knows how many Step 1 affiliates will jump in the pool for their share of the fun rather than waiting around for the water to heat up. These are pretty significant changes, and only the future can tell what comes out of it. With a supportive community, a hard working team and new revenue streams added, ACME People Search looks pretty safe for now, at least.
